Cooney, Scully and Dowling has one of the largest civil litigation practices in Connecticut. While perhaps best known as a defense firm, Cooney, Scully and Dowling is active in most areas of civil litigation in state and federal courts. Because of our experience, clients often call on us to represent them in their complex or unique litigation matters in addition to their traditional civil cases. We prosecute and defend appeals arising from our trial practice and often have been engaged as appellate counsel on matters tried by other attorneys.

The firm represents the insureds of a number of insurance carriers, including CNA, St. Paul Travelers Insurance Company, The Hartford, Safeco, Quincy Mutual Fire Insurance Company, Catholic Mutual Group, Liberty Mutual, AIG, Medmarc, and Chubb in negligence, products liability, premises and general liability claims. For over twenty years, we have represented the State of Connecticut in litigation, defending motor vehicle, police pursuit and defective highway claims. We have represented other governmental entities in similar litigation, as well as in civil rights litigation.

In addition to representing the insureds of many insurance companies, we also represent insurance companies directly, in coverage analysis, in coverage disputes, and in unfair practices and bad faith litigation. We represent several railroads and handle litigation for several of the larger corporations in Connecticut including AT&T. We represent manufacturers of medical devices and other products in product liability cases.

A substantial part of our practice involves defending professional malpractice cases, including claims brought against physicians, psychologists, dentists, and health care institutions, attorneys, architects, engineers and other building professionals, real estate appraisers and agents, and insurance agents. We are presently approved as defense counsel for many medical liability insurers, such as Connecticut Medical Insurance Company, St. Paul Travelers, SCPIE/American Healthcare Indemnity, Chubb/Executive Risk, Caronia and ProMutual Group. We have served for many years as the primary defense counsel for St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center. We have defended many other major hospitals including Hartford Hospital, MidState Medical Center, Bristol Hospital, Johnson Memorial Hospital, Natchaug Hospital, and Connecticut Children's Medical Center.

In our litigation work, we have represented employers before the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities, and defended them in civil lawsuits. We have appeared before numerous land use boards, and other town boards and agencies. We have represented institutions and individuals before the Department of Children and Families, the Department of Social Services, the Department of Mental Retardation, and before the licensing boards and commissions within the Department of Public Health and before a number of other state boards and commissions. While our civil litigation practice is predominantly defense oriented, we also represent individuals who have been seriously injured due to the negligence of others.
